Join the winning teamUsdaw’s award-winning campaigns will continue to promote more respect, improved rights and better career opportunities for all members. Usdaw's first National Membership Week of 2008 at the end of January was a huge success with more than 3,000 new members recruited across the UK pushing our total membership above the 360,000 mark, says general secretary John Hannett. "Our activists and officials have pulled out all the stops and done a tremendous job at what is traditionally one of the most difficult periods for recruitment." Speak to your rep or ring your local office and find out how you can get involved in signing up new members and in the unions' next National Membership Week in June. "Usdaw's award winning campaigns continue to make a real difference to the lives of our members and their families," added John. "As the campaigning union we've already Saved Our Sundays from extended opening hours in England and Wales, and protected Christmas Day in Scotland. We will continue to campaign in 2008 to make further improvements for members. "All our activists, officials and sponsored MPs will be working together to lobby government and gather support from the public across the full range of our campaigns." Call: 0845 6060640
Freedom From FearThe award winning Freedom From Fear campaign continues to raise awareness of the dangers faced by staff from aggressive and violent customers.Usdaw will hold its annual national Respect for Shopworkers Day in early November. The event works as a reminder to shoppers that abuse is not part of the job and reaffirms that shopworkers should be treated with dignity and respect. In previous years the day has been very successful with members and activists in stores across the UK promoting the campaign.
Supporting Parents & CarersThis award winning campaign will gather momentum in 2008 with a special Spotlight Day on June 11, which will focus on improving rights for working carers. Usdaw members and activists will help raise awareness by organising a variety of events in their workplaces. You can help Usdaw improve carers' rights by completing the online carers day survey. Usdaw will also be submitting the results of the survey to the Government's review of flexible working.
Migrant and Agency Workers CampaignOrganising Migrant and Agency Workers remains a key challenge for Usdaw for 2008. Surveys and pilot projects have been conducted on the use of migrant and agency workers. Usdaw will continue to campaign for laws to give UK agency workers the right to equal treatment on issues such as job security, pay, working time and holidays, maternity rights and protection against discrimination. The union has also recently produced a booklet on rights at work in Polish.
Check Out LearningPart of the union's lifelong learning initiative, this campaign aims to bring opportunities to get back into learning for thousands of retail workers. It was launched in 2007 and has made rapid progress.Eighty roadshows were held last year with many more planned for 2008 at companies ranging from Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ikea to highlight the courses available. Usdaw's team of project workers and learning reps have been instrumental in offering numeracy, literacy, computer and foreign language courses to thousands of members. |
