Expert help for victim

Butcher David Dickson was left with severe concussion, headaches and anxiety after a shoplifter attacked him in his store.

However the union's expertise ensured he was awarded £1,500 from the Government's Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).

"The incident happened in July last year," explained David, 58, who works for Morrisons in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"I'd just finished my lunch break and was coming back into the store through the front entrance when I noticed a known shoplifter heading towards me carrying a couple of carrier bags.

"As I walked towards him he took a lunge at me. He caught me by surprise and I was knocked flying. I banged the back of my head against the glass door and I was out cold.

"The following day I had a severe headache and my vision was blurred. I went to see my GP and was sent to the hospital for tests.

"I had a scan and was told I had concussion but that there was no internal damage. I was able to return to work.

"The police came to see me at work and I made a statement and was given a crime number.

"Usdaw helped me put a claim in with the CICA. The support from the union's legal department was excellent and helped take away all the stress. Everything was explained in plain English, it couldn't have been easier.

"My case was settled six months after the attack. Everyone should join Usdaw - take it from me membership is essential - it's your insurance policy at work."

Usdaw has recovered more than £1.75m for its members over the last five years under the CICA scheme

Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is a government-funded scheme set up to compensate anyone who has been injured because of a violent crime.

Usdaw members will be given legal assistance through the Legal Plus scheme to make a claim.

If you have been a victim of crime, or for more information, speak to your union rep or your local Usdaw office or call the national helpline on 0845 6060640.

Remember you have to follow strict rules and to qualify you MUST have:

  • Been a victim of a crime of violence, and either physically or psychologically injured as a result.
  • Reported the incident personally to the police as soon as possible after it happened.
  • Been injured seriously enough to qualify for at least the minimum award.
  • Sent off your application within two years from the date of the incident.
Compensation will not usually be paid if:

  • The crime took place more than two years ago.
  • You have not personally reported the incident to the police within 48 hours.
  • You have not co-operated fully with the police in their investigation and/or prosecution.
  • Your injuries are only minor.
  • You provoked the situation.
  • The crime took place outside of England, Scotland or Wales, (there is a parallel scheme with similar rules in Northern Ireland).
