Respect Day: Freedom From Fear
It’s been a phenomenal year for Usdaw’s campaigns – further strengthening the union’s reputation as the campaigning union. Here is a look back at the highlights of the last 12 months, a year which has seen more and more reps and members get involved in union activity
Usdaw held its annual national Respect For Shopworkers Day on July 11 with a focus on reminding shoppers that staff deserved to be treated with dignity and respect and that abusive behaviour would not be tolerated.
A national launch was held in London at a Co-op store in Eltham, which has an in-house police station inside where senior government politicians and company management gave their support to general secretary John Hannett.
Elsewhere activists organised store or high street stalls to spread the message, give out campaign material and raise the union's profile among employees, customers and the general public.
Many local MPs turned up to offer their support and the day was also boosted by Tesco's introduction of 'zero tolerance' posters in its stores.
