Public holidays

Your question answered.

Why don't retail workers get the same public holidays, for example Christmas Day/Boxing Day/New Year's Day, as other workers?

Public holidays, often referred to as Bank Holidays, are determined not by law but by your contract of employment. Under most Usdaw agreements staff will still get the equivalent of three days paid public holidays but these may not be on the three days mentioned above.

It is worth asking now about your company's trading arrangements for the forthcoming festive season and asking for details of how your contractual rights will be upheld.

You are more than likely to be off on Christmas Day but there are so many variations in contracts in retail, it's important you know what you are entitled to. So don't leave it too late, make enquiries now and give yourself time to plan ahead.

While this advice is accurate it is not a definitive guide to the law or your contract. If you have any concerns you should contact your local rep/official or ring the helpline 0845 6060640.
