Accident insurance
Union membership is an insurance policy you can’t afford to be without said HGV driver Henry Lindop, who sustained multiple injuries after he was involved in a road traffic accident on his way to work.
"The union took care of everything," said Henry, 67, who works for CRL in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. "I had a first-class service all the way through and was delighted when I received a cheque for £32,500."
The accident happened four years ago when Henry was driving to work. His car was hit in a head-on collision with a lorry. "I have no recollection of what happened," he said. "I've since been told I was trapped beneath the lorry for about an hour before I was released and then airlifted to hospital by helicopter."
Henry suffered amnesia, a dislocated hip, a fractured pelvis, and fractured ribs as well as cuts and bruises.
"I was in a bad way. I spent 14 weeks in hospital and nine months off work recovering from my injuries."
Henry returned to work in 2004 and was put on light duties.
"After the accident my union rep contacted me at home and advised me to fill in a claim form for Legal Plus and from then my union appointed solicitor took care of everything for me.
"Everyone should join the union. The benefits are there for you from day one even if you have an accident on your way to or from work, just like me."
