A great year for the union
Everyone in Usdaw can look back on 2007 with a great deal of pride and satisfaction.
Membership is up, our profile has increased and our campaigns have won national recognition because they are based on the experiences of our members.
Our Freedom From Fear campaign hit the headlines again in late October when a survey alarmingly showed an increase of 50 per cent in the number of reported violent incidents. It also showed the number of threats had increased. This was very worrying news because for the last few years there has been a gradual decrease in the level of violence and abuse which I think we can attribute to our Freedom From Fear campaign which has successfully raised these issue with employers, government, local authorities and the police.
Right across the retail industry we have made improvements in safety procedures, awareness and staff training. We can never totally eliminate the career criminal but we are determined to minimise the risks to our members and stop the casual abuse many shoppers believe they can get away with. Shopworkers deserve respect and Usdaw's message is clear: Abuse is not part of the job. Our campaign will continue and I would urge all members to get involved.
Looking ahead, I think we can approach 2008 with confidence. We are in a strong position and that's down to the hard work of our reps, officials and staff who are working tirelessly for Usdaw's 356,000 plus membership. There are plenty of challenges ahead but we are well equipped to meet them.
I want to thank all of our members for their support throughout 2007 and reassure you that Usdaw will continue to strive to improve your terms and conditions and give you the best possible service.
A happy Christmas and all the very best for the New Year to all our readers.
John Hannett
General Secretary
