Binge drinking: Prevention and cure

The night out and the morning after.

Tips for partygoers

  • Food first - eat before you go out. Food slows down the rate of absorption that's why alcohol affects you more quickly on an empty stomach
  • Decide your limit and avoid rounds - drink at your own pace
  • Know what you're drinking and don't mix your drinks
  • Go for less-alcoholic longer drinks
  • Say no to top-ups
  • Leave your car at home (have taxi numbers in your phone)
  • Don't walk home alone, look out for your friends and vice versa

The morning after

  • Drink as much water as possible
  • Use painkillers
  • Take an antacid to settle your stomach
  • Remember alcohol is a depressant so expect to feel awful
  • Drinking lowers your blood sugar level, so eat as soon as you can, bananas, cereal or egg on toast
  • Never do hair of the dog - it will prolong the agony
  • Have 48 hours off the booze if it was a heavy session, this will give your liver time to recover and detox
