Binge drinking: Prevention and cure
The night out and the morning after.
Tips for partygoers
- Food first - eat before you go out. Food slows down the rate of absorption that's why alcohol affects you more quickly on an empty stomach
- Decide your limit and avoid rounds - drink at your own pace
- Know what you're drinking and don't mix your drinks
- Go for less-alcoholic longer drinks
- Say no to top-ups
- Leave your car at home (have taxi numbers in your phone)
- Don't walk home alone, look out for your friends and vice versa
The morning after
- Drink as much water as possible
- Use painkillers
- Take an antacid to settle your stomach
- Remember alcohol is a depressant so expect to feel awful
- Drinking lowers your blood sugar level, so eat as soon as you
can, bananas, cereal or egg on toast
- Never do hair of the dog - it will prolong the agony
- Have 48 hours off the booze if it was a heavy session, this will give your liver time to recover and detox
