Binge drinking: The facts

The effects of alcohol on your body now and in the future.

Your health

  • Alcohol is high in calories and will inevitably end in weight gain
  • Alcohol dehydrates your body and skin
  • Alcohol dilates blood vessels near the surface of the skin, causing ugly red veins, especially round the nose and cheeks
  • Alcohol can also give you bloodshot eyes, bad breath and of course the mind-numbing, head-pounding, thirst-inducing hangover!

Heavy drinking - The long term consequences

  • Dependence, alcoholism
  • Impotence/sexual difficulties, diminished sexual performance
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Pancreatitis
  • Certain types of cancer, especially breast cancer
  • Stomach disorders, ulcers
  • Mood changes, anxiety, stress, depression
  • Increased risk of heart disease and certain types of stroke
