Thousands of new recruits give Usdaw a massive boost

Recruitment soared after the union’s first ever Membership Week in July with reps and officials helping the union to break through the 353,000 barrier.

The Week reflected an unprecedented growth in members during the last four months with a net gain of more than 13,000 new recruits.

"The feedback from the reps has been very positive," said general secretary John Hannett. "This has been a major success and it will become a regular event in the union's calendar. Many divisions more than doubled their usual weekly intake. Our national membership hasn't been this high since 1990."

John made a special trip to the Isle of Man along with his deputy Paddy Lillis and North West deputy divisional officer Dave Gill to visit reps and potential members.

From there the trio travelled to Belfast to leaflet outside the Marks and Spencer store with a team of activists to maintain the drive for recognition at the high street chain.
