Young people at work face added danger

There were 12 young people killed at work in the year 2004/5, latest figures have revealed.

The same safety statistics also showed that on average a young worker is seriously injured every 40 minutes - that is 4,000 accidents a year - and there were an additional 15,000 less serious accidents.

"Young workers are at particular risk because for so many this will be their first job," said safety officer Doug Russell. "There are more than four million workers in the UK aged between 16-24, half a million of these are aged 16-17. We need to ensure there is adequate training in place for everyone."
