Shopfloor joy after campaign triumph Heather and Debbie’s hard work pays off
When we heard that Usdaw was launching a campaign to protect the six hour limit on Sunday trading, me and my colleague Debbie Davidson (above right) started collecting signatures on the petition last November. At the time we had little idea of how big this campaign was going to be, writes Heather Morris (above left).
From both of us, and all of our colleagues at our Sainsbury's store in Alphington, Devon, we want to say a big thank you to the union and all of the staff who did such a great job 'behind the scenes'.
Debbie and I went to London earlier this year as part of the union team to lobby MPs in the Houses of Parliament. That was a great day and helped get our campaign noticed. Many of us also filled in the 'Save Our Sundays' postcard. In our store everyone is much more relaxed now that they know Sunday trading will not be extended in the large stores. When you campaign for something and you win it's a great feeling and proves all of the hardwork was worthwhile. Everyone who signed the petition felt they had made their own contribution to the victory.
Debbie and I are already looking to our next campaign which will focus on young people at work. This will coincide with the European Safety Week in October.
Life's never dull in Usdaw!
