Arena Magazine 2006 Issue 4 Autumn Arena

Campaigning and winning for you

By John Hannett, General Secretary

I was delighted that the Government decided not to carry out proposals to extend Sunday trading for the big retailers. We said all along that this would put pressure on our members and disrupt family life even more. In the end the Government agreed with us and we won the day.

This just shows how influential Usdaw can be when our members, reps and officials unite behind a worthwhile campaign. It comes hot on the heels of our successful campaign last year to stop large retailers opening on Christmas Day in England and Wales.

It's victories like these that make being in the union all the more worthwhile. You'll see in this issue that not only are we the campaigning union on the big issues we also score many other victories on a day-to-day basis.

Our Legal Plus service continues to recover millions of pounds for members injured or treated unfairly at work. Usdaw members don't have to risk using one of the so-called 'no win no fee' solicitors who charge insurance and other fees and often leave victims with little or none of their compensation.

Our officials and reps are always busy looking after members on the shopfloor and beyond.

Lifelong Learning opportunities continue to increase and our determination to keep members informed on the pensions issue has just seen the launch of a special section on our web site.

You can check these and all of the other services Usdaw offers online.

We had a great response to our first new look arena with the overwhelming majority of feedback very positive. I won't pretend we pleased everyone, but it was clear the vast majority of members liked the new format and especially the fact that it was sent to their home address.
