Simon says “get into learning”

Usdaw learning rep Simon Mahoney is at the forefront of an exciting new initiative to help workers boost their skills and their self-confidence.

His remarkable success was recognised by none other than Chancellor Gordon Brown at a special launch event held at 11 Downing Street earlier this year.

"Meeting Gordon Brown was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Simon, who works at the Christian Salvesen depot in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. "The chancellor was down to earth and relaxed. He was also very knowledgeable about lifelong learning."

The VIP event was the launch of the TUC's unionlearn project.

"This compliments Usdaw's lifelong learning policy," said Simon. "At our depot we've helped workers access courses on IT, basic skills, and English for speakers of other languages - which has gone down really well with the migrant workers on site.

"Getting involved in lifelong learning has made a real difference to me and my workmates. I'd recommend it."
