26 and below

Sachin Patel, 18, is a student who works part-time. He is also one of the union’s 50,000 members aged 26 or below.

Why are you involved in the union?

I am involved in the union because I like to know I am protected in everyday life.

What's surprised you about the union?

When I attend union events I get to know a lot of new people who otherwise I wouldn't get to meet. It's also surprised me how much I can learn from them.

What difference has Usdaw made to your life?

Usdaw has made me see things and people in a new light and has taught me to think with an open mind.

Which union events have you been involved with?

I've been on a youth weekend and two divisional conferences as well as a campaign at the Houses of Parliament which I really enjoyed. I was also won the 'Most Promising New Activist' award for my division and went to the National Usdaw Organising Awards event earlier this year.

What's a typical day for Sachin Patel?

Well, I am at college all week and then doing work over the weekend and hopefully catching up with my mates, if I am not working.

What do you think is the most important issue for young workers?

The minimum wage and respect for young people at work.

Which news items have caught your attention lately and why?

The whole issue on whether Tony Blair is going to step down or not. He should do it now rather than leave the country guessing.

What makes you angry/happy?

Angry - seeing people with talent having to leave college because the price of going to university has risen. Happy - seeing Liverpool win the Premier League and England the World Cup.

If you could introduce one new law what would it be?

My law would be to scrap the new £3,000 top up fees for university.

Which person has had the greatest influence on you?

My parents because they have always taught me that nothing in life is impossible and they're always there when I need help.

What's next for Sachin Patel?

Exam preparation then to university to study Law (LLB) in September. Also I'll try and become more active in the union.

Trivia file

What would be your dream/nightmare job?

Dream job - successful solicitor. Nightmare - school canteen cook.

What was your first job and what's your earliest memory of it?

My first job was a security guard at Twickenham Rugby Ground and my earliest memory has to be seeing the whole England team arrive to take on the All Blacks.

Who would you invite to your celebrity dinner party? And what would be on the menu?

I'd invite Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver as the chefs, they would make a traditional English roast. The celebrities would be Steven Gerrard and Freddie Flintoff for the sport side and I would have the likes of Adam Sandler, and Peter Kay for entertainment.

Which famous person living or dead would you like to meet?

Two people Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
