Arena Magazine 2006 Issue 2 March April

Sunday working means lower premiums

Mike Jackson, West Kent General H97.

I read your article with interest on the issue of Sunday trading in the Jan/Feb issue.

As a shopworker of more than 30 years I've worked for a number of companies. It worries me that some retailers prefer to pay single time to new employees for working Sundays while laying off long serving staff who would be entitled to premium rates. I also think many of these workers are afraid to take action.

I doubt very much that more hours on a Sunday will lead to a better service nor will the retailers pay up.
