Speaking up for women workers
Women workers are still subject to discrimination even though the Sex Discrimination Act is 30 years old, that was the message from Usdaw’s delegation to this year’s TUC Women’s conference.
"We need support for parents and carers and better provision for paid and flexible parental leave," said Jan Jervis.
Activist Jayne Justin spoke about pregnancy discrimination. "Usdaw's own research showed that many women are still sacked or demoted because they're pregnant."
It was fitting that Conference should open on International Women's Day.
The theme of this year's Conference was End Violence Against Women. "Women are still paying for inequality with their lives - two women a week in the UK are killed by a male partner or former partner," said Equalities Officer Ruth Cross.
"The conference also coincided with the Women & Work Commission's report to Government on equal pay - an issue which dominated the conference agenda."
