New era in push for equality

The union’s determination to include members from all sections of society moved a step closer in March when activists representing women, black, Asian, disabled, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members met in Manchester.

The reps, drawn from the union's seven divisions, made up the inaugural national equalities advisory group that has replaced the women and race relations committees.

"This was a new beginning for everyone in Usdaw who wants to make us a more inclusive and representative union," said equalities officer Ruth Cross.

"We set the programme of activity for the coming year which included plans for a fringe meeting at the Annual Delegate Meeting on disability. We are also putting in place training for reps taking up equality issues.

"This first meeting went very well. There were a lot of new faces and it was very encouraging to see all of the reps working together and learning from each other. The group will meet quarterly and if the first meeting is anything to go by we have a positive and productive future ahead of us."
