MFI to cut jobs
Usdaw is on stand-by after furniture group MFI announced it will cut more than 1,500 jobs – mainly at its manufacturing sites – after an internal review and falling sales at the faltering chain.
Around 100 retail jobs will go when 11 stores close. Another 15 outlets are under threat which could see more than 350 further job losses.
"It's always difficult to represent members without a formal agreement but our MFI members are amongst our very best activists," said National Officer John Gorle. "This is a difficult time for all the employees and I would urge them to sign up with Usdaw so we can help them to protect their future employment rights.
"Our members have been telling us for some time about the problems at the company but the sales staff shouldn't lose their jobs because of it.
"The furniture sector is one of the most fiercely competitive in retail and our members are MFI's greatest asset."
