Usdaw wins funding to demystify pensions
Usdaw has won Government funding to run a pension awareness campaign to ensure its 340,000 members can make an informed choice for their retirement.
Usdaw has secured funding from the Pension Education Fund (PEF) to run a nationwide awareness campaign designed to give union members the knowledge to decide what the best options are as they look to their retirement.
The campaign will include funding for an Usdaw pension website, in-depth seminars for union members and a range of home study courses that will teach many more shopworkers to understand the key issues around pension funds.
"We're delighted to win funding from this innovative scheme the Government has created to reach those workers unsure of their pension rights," said general secretary John Hannett.
"Usdaw will play its part and reach out to all sections of the workforce who remain uncertain how pensions work, particularly for women and part-time workers, who are often at the bottom of the pension pile."
The funding will be available until March 2008. The minister of state for pension reform Stephen Timms MP is heavily involved. "At least three million people in the UK are not saving enough for their retirement," he said. "The Pensions Education Fund was set up to support organisations with innovative ideas about how to help working people actively plan for their retirement.
"Financial education is very important to ensure people can make confident choices about their financial future. The organisations that have made successful applications to the PEF will have an important role to play in providing trusted and impartial information to working people."
