Security service

A substantial amount of compensation and essential financial security was recovered for Dave Bergess and his family after he was seriously injured in an accident at work.

In January 1999 Dave worked at the Somerfield depot in Kent. "I fell off the loading bay when the lorry I was unloading pulled away without warning," said Dave, 48.

He sustained multiple injuries including broken ribs, acid burns and a severed ear. The Health and Safety Executive investigated the accident and the company were found guilty of negligence and fined. Dave's claim was settled four years later.

"My employment options are extremely limited now because of the accident. But without the union I wouldn't have received a penny. Everyone needs the security a big organisation like Usdaw provides."
