Carers set to win new rights
Workers who care for sick and disabled relatives will be able to request flexible working after the Government announced plans to extend the right, which currently is only open to working parents with young children.
Usdaw has welcomed the move which will be extended to carers in 2007. "We've been one of the main backers of extending the right to request flexible working to carers," said general secretary John Hannett.
"We're delighted the Government listened to our strong case and recognised that the unpaid army of carers in the UK need some help if they are to combine their working and caring commitments.
This is one of a number of political gains Usdaw's campaign has secured from the Government. Others include:
- Paid maternity leave will go up from six to nine months in April 2007, and from nine to 12 months in April 2009.
- The Government has agreed to look at the case for extending the right to flexible working to parents of all children (not just disabled children) under 18.
