Jobs boost as Tesco soars
Supermarket giant Tesco has announced plans to create more than 7,000 jobs after it revealed an 18.7 per cent rise in its first half year profits – a record for the UK’s biggest retailer.
Pre-tax profits rose to £908 million with sales rising by 14.1 per cent to £18.8 billion.
The latest industry figures put Tesco's share of the grocery market at 30.5 per cent. Its competitors line up as follows: Asda 16.7, Sainsbury's 15.7, Morrisons 11.3, Somerfield 5.9, Co-operatives 5, Waitrose 3.7, and Iceland 1.8.
Usdaw has more than 115,000 members employed across the Tesco group making it the biggest employer of union members in the private sector.
The company has more than 1,770 stores ranging from its small convenience Express and Metro formats (706) to its superstores (446) and the massive Extra hypermarkets (100). It also trades under the One Stop (527) fascia.
