Giving you the Respect you deserve
Usdaw is determined to protect its members from violence and abuse – that was the uncompromising message for the third Respect for Shopworkers Day held on July 13.
Members, reps and officials were out in force to promote Respect Day - part of the award-winning Freedom From Fear campaign.
Activists were joined by a number of MPs at stores and supermarkets across the UK proving once again the widespread parliamentary support for the campaign.
"Statistics show that a shopworker is attacked or verbally abused every minute of the working day," said general secretary John Hannett. "This is completely unacceptable. Freedom From Fear is all about helping to protect our members and as long as there is retail crime there is an important role for our campaign."
Freedom From Fear
- Was launched in October 2002.
- A national petition calling on the Government to improve safety for retail staff was signed by more than 100,000 people and handed in to Downing Street in July 2003.
- Safety procedures and booklets were drawn up to advise employers and staff on how they could improve safety at their workplace.
- As part of the week reps set up stalls and events attracting widespread media coverage.
- It won the prestigious TUC award for best campaign in 2004.
