Delivering peace of mind and financial security
Sound, professional advice helped secure £10,000 in compensation for warehouse operative Derek Jeffrey after he broke his ankle at work.
"I couldn't have asked for a better service and what's more it didn't cost me a penny," said Derek, 67. "The union took care of everything and I was kept fully up-to-date every step of the way."
The accident happened in 2001 when Derek worked for Tesco at its depot in Brackmills, Northampton. "I was loading pallets onto a trailer when my ankle was struck by a loading truck," he said. "My foot swelled up immediately and I was taken to hospital for x-rays. I was sent home to rest. Further x-rays revealed a fracture and my foot was put in plaster."
Derek was off work for six months and is now back at the depot working part-time and on lighter duties. His case was settled earlier this year.
"I tell everyone to join the union," he said. "Because you need the backing of a big organisation to help you when things go wrong."
Derek Jeffrey is one of many members to take advantage of the union's Legal Plus service. A quick round-up of recent cases shows the following:
- Warehouse worker Neil Norcross, 40, was awarded £1,000 when he injured his back in an accident at the Sainsbury distribution centre in Haydock, St Helens.
- Boots health care assistant Dawn Wallace, 62, from Nottingham won £1,260 in compensation when she was hit by a car on her way home from work.
- Sainsbury's general assistant Margaret Clarkson, 54, from Edinburgh was awarded £2,000 when she fractured her ribs in an accident at work.
- Yvonne Lockwood received £3,530 when she burnt her right arm and hand while working in the restaurant at the MOTO service station in West Yorkshire.
