Jus the job!

A bakers dozen of workers from the Jus-Rol pastry factory in Berwick can breathe a lot easier these days after the union successfully concluded their legal claims for occupational asthma.

Thirteen members shared more than half a million pounds in compensation in settlements ranging from £10,000 to £60,000.

Newcastle-based solicitors Beecham Peacock handled the cases on Usdaw's behalf. The first was settled in 2003 and the final cases completed in summer 2005. Since the claims were made the company has invested heavily on improved safety equipment at the factory to reduce the risk of flour dust inhalation.
