Legal protection from day one

Luckily distribution worker Jason Wilcox joined Usdaw on his first day at work because without it he might have missed out on £27,000 in compensation after sustaining a serious back injury at work.

The accident happened just four months after signing up in September 2002 at the ACC depot in Swanley, Kent. A picker truck crashed into Jason, 34, and he has been off work ever since.

"I was absolutely delighted when a colleague contacted the union and I found out I was entitled to assistance under the Legal Plus scheme," said Jason.

"After filling in a simple form, I had a solicitor in no time. Everything was sorted out for me.

"I've seen a number of medical specialists. Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm back at work.

"The help I had from Usdaw was invaluable. There's no way I could have financed the treatment myself and who knows what condition I would be in now without it.

"Take my advice, join the union and you'll be guaranteed protection from day one of your job."
