Why are you involved in the union?

I believe in fairness and workers' rights and enjoy promoting these issues in the workplace.

What's surprised you about the union?

The many benefits inside and outside of work. Legal advice, will writing and a free interview with a solicitor for example.

If you could introduce one new law what would it be?

I'd cut the amount of income tax we pay. It's too high at present..

How would you increase union membership?

By telling potential members about how Usdaw has helped other workers just like them. You have to keep the workforce informed on all of the important issues.

What advice would you give to other young reps?

Get involved, you won't regret it. Your knowledge and confidence will rocket.

What has the union ever done for you?

It's helped me sort out some problems at work. Most importantly it has given me confidence to know that we are working to make things fair.

Have you been on any Usdaw training courses?

Yes, recently, at the Leeds office and it was very useful and enjoyable. We touched on employment law and representing members. It was excellent.

What do you think is the most important issue for young workers?

To get involved in Usdaw and keep the good work going.

What's the best thing about being a rep?

Helping your colleagues which can be very satisfying.

How would you rate the Labour Government?

They are much better than the Tories but I don't agree with everything Labour do.

Who has had the biggest influence on your life?

My mother, who brought me up single-handedly and has done a cracking job!

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be?

I'd have stayed on longer at school.

What's next for Keir Mackay?

To carry on raising membership and further my knowledge of the union.
