Time to cut back on holiday working (star letter)
From Alan Trainer, Northern Private Trades F176.
I'd like to congratulate Usdaw on the work it put in to the Christmas Day Trading Bill which was very successful. It really does help retail workers in England and Wales.
However, what about bank holidays? Should we not be fighting to get companies to trade on these days as if they were a Sunday?
Bank holidays are for families, all schools are closed, so we would rather be with them than be at work all day. Retail workers are being asked to work longer and longer hours on bank holidays and when you ask why, it's always - for the needs of the business!
Well, what about the needs of the staff and their families? It's about time we brought in the same law for bank holidays as we have for Sunday trading.
