Community PACT to make streets safer
Staff and shoppers in Barry, South Wales, are set to enjoy a safer community after Usdaw rep Dave Sharpe was instrumental in setting up a crime reduction scheme.
The Tesco CCTV operator has managed to bring together local businesses, the police, the council and others to establish the appropriately named Preventing Anti-social Crime Together (PACT).
"I was fed up of seeing the 'usual suspects' moved on from one store to another," said Dave, 49, "and I wanted to do something about it."
It all started in September 2003 when Dave approached local management at Tesco with a view to doing more about the problem. "I was encouraged to take it further and 18 months later we have a great team in place who want to make the community a safer place to live and work. Any offender will be banned from all PACT premises and ASBOs and social exclusion orders issued when necessary."
Tesco have given Dave time-off and financial backing. "This scheme is all about making the community safer," he added. "The secret of our success is the amount of teamwork going on behind the scenes. We want to expand PACT to the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond."
