Huge success for Maternity Rights Day
In workplaces, high streets and shopping centres across the UK members turned out in force to give their support to Usdaw’s Spotlight day on maternity rights.
In the first of three special campaign days which in turn will feature maternity issues, rights for carers, and the problems faced by working parents, Usdaw activists put Supporting Parents and Carers centre-stage.
A number of MPs were happy to lend their support including chancellor Gordon Brown who took time out from the general election campaign to sign one of Usdaw's Put Kids First banners which have been displayed at key union events.
General secretary John Hannett has been impressed with the overwhelming endorsement the campaign has received from members. "From all the feedback we've been getting it's clear this campaign has struck a major chord with working people," he said.
"We have a pledge from government to improve maternity leave which is very welcome, although we think more could be done.
"It's clear also that working people who have caring responsibilities have a real struggle to balance the demands on their time.
"Once we hold our carers day on June 14, the next initiative is to raise the difficulties faced by working parents. I'm confident we'll win similar levels of support."
Spotlight Days - Get involved
