Employment news in brief
April proved to be a disastrous month for employment prospects across a number of Usdaw sectors with more than 1,000 job losses announced in addition to the potential 3,200 at Index.
General secretary John Hannett pledged Usdaw's support for all those workers under threat. "We will use the statutory consultation process to press the companies to relocate as many employees as possible in other parts of the business."
The Co-op Group announced 400 jobs would go at five distribution sites across the UK. A new national distribution site in Coventry will create around 520 new jobs. The news came after a review of the company's distribution requirements following the expansion of its convenience store portfolio.
At Kettle Produce in Fyfe, Ayrshire, 101 jobs will go after a reorganisation programme.
At Grampian Country Food Group in Buckie, Scotland, more than 300 jobs will go as the company moves work to other sites around the UK.
Llangadog Creamery in North Wales is set to close with the loss of 250 dairy jobs.
"These announcements are a devastating blow to our members and their local communities. It's a very uncertain time for loyal and hard working families and Usdaw will do all it can to soften the impact," added John Hannett.
