Getting involved in your store

One of the best opportunities to make a difference in your workplace is now available as elections for union representatives are being held in Tesco stores across the UK in April and May. The Usdaw/Tesco partnership agreement allows at least one rep in every store. Currently more than 2,500 Tesco staff are Usdaw reps. They play a key role in looking after the union’s 115,000 Tesco members. Arena takes a closer look at how to get involved.

The best union/company agreement in retail can be found at Tesco but it can only be successful with the active participation of ordinary working people - like you - becoming involved.

Union reps have a number of qualities, they are: good listeners, good communicators and keen to play a positive role in helping other members of staff get the most out of their working lives.

Being a union rep will give you an added interest in your work and you will be given training by Usdaw, in works' time, to help you fulfill your role. You will also have the support of other more senior reps and the local area organiser.

The work of a rep is varied, rewarding and enjoyable. It involves:

  • Recruiting new members.
  • Representing their interests in-store at local meetings.
  • Communicating important messages to the membership.
  • Participating in local forums.

General secretary John Hannett wants everybody to vote in the elections. "This is a great example of democracy in action," he said. "I'm hopeful the elections will attract widespread interest and support from our members. In some stores we don't have a rep, so there are openings for many members out there to get involved and make a real difference."

What do the reps think?

"As an Usdaw rep you're part of a big team working hard to get the best deal for the workforce."
Rena MacIsaac

"I've been on many Usdaw training courses which have certainly helped me in my role as a rep."
Colin Marriott

"Being a rep is very rewarding. I really enjoy it, and recommend it. Members really appreciate good reps."
Hilda Harkness

Join in and speak up!

  • Any Usdaw member aged 18 or over with 12 months' membership can stand for election as an in-store union rep.
