Summer time … summer schools
If you want to improve your skills and knowledge of the union and spend an enjoyable week with like-minded people then the Usdaw summer schools may be right up your street.
Activists can apply for one of the two summer schools, which run during September. Places are limited so it's best to make enquiries sooner rather than later. The union pays for all accommodation costs for both schools and members awarded a place can claim travelling fares and allowances as well as reasonable childcare costs.
The first school will be held at the University of Durham Conference Centre, Stockton, from 3-10 September. The venue is self-contained, secure and fully accessible. All bedrooms have full en-suite facilities.
The school is aimed at members who have already shown some commitment to the union and are keen to play a more active role in Usdaw. It aims to develop an understanding of union policies, as well as improving organising, communication skills and self-confidence.
The second school will be held at the national training centre in Warrington, Cheshire, and will be run over two separate weeks.
The first week will be held from 18 - 24 September and the second week from 25 September - 1 October.
This school is aimed at people who have usually attended the first school, or the branch officers' course and who already play an active role at their workplace and their branch.
More than 120 members attended last year's schools. Here's what some of them had to say:
- "I'd definitely recommend it." - Safeway's Heather Young.
- "It was excellent" - Tesco's Frankie McDonald.
- "I loved the summer schools. They helped improve my knowledge and self-confidence" - Co-op's Ken Kenny.
