Discrimination still rife in non-union sector
It’s clear pregnant women still face discrimination in the workplace even though this is the 21st century.
An anonymous letter sent in via the web site, and summarised below, illustrates the kind of unfair treatment meted out particularly to non-union members working for small companies. It read:
"Since my wife, who works in a small shop in London, informed her boss she was pregnant; she was told to attend ante-natal classes on her day off, couldn't use her e-mail system, the boss changed her method of payment from bank transfer to cheque (which didn't arrive and her account went overdrawn and fees incurred), she has been excluded from meetings, and even denied time off for a close friend's wedding.
This has been very stressful for us both but particularly for my wife who has had high blood pressure. I'm amazed such working conditions exist in modern Britain."
- Usdaw has produced a Maternity and Parental Rights Pack giving useful information on rights such as leave and pay, health and safety and returning to work. There is also a handy wall planner to help you log any key dates.
