Abuse still rife in shops

From name and address supplied (via e-mail)

I'd like to congratulate the union on its Freedom From Fear campaign, but I'm sure the figures you quote for the amount of verbal and physical abuse is grossly under-estimated.

Where I work the level of abuse is constant from druggies, alcoholics and shoplifters. Staff have been attacked and even stabbed and, despite having security guards on site some of the time, it's a very scary place to work and shop at times.

Gangs of youths often cause a nuisance outside, and sometimes on the roof of the shop. My car was vandalised after I ejected some of these from the store. Bins have been set alight as well.

We often ring the police but are told they are too busy or, if they say they'll send someone around, they never turn up.

There is still a lot of work to do and we need more support from employers, police and the community.
