Training video to make staff safer

Co-operative Retail has produced a special video on safety, incorporating the union’s Freedom From Fear campaign, as part of a comprehensive training package for store managers and staff

Employees will see the video during training days aimed exclusively at reducing the risk of attack, theft and personal injury. It carries a message of support from general secretary John Hannett and makes use of the union's Respect song from the Freedom From Fear Respect Week held last July.

The initiative represents considerable investment in health and safety by Co-operative Retail, which represents all societies with retail interests, and has won praise from national officer Sharon Ainsworth. "I'd like to congratulate Co-operative Retail for taking the issue of staff safety so seriously," she said.

"The video and training package carries a strong message that employees should not put themselves at risk and Usdaw fully supports this stance."

The video offers training and advice on how to deal with verbal abuse, anti-social behaviour, customer theft, robbery and physical assault.
