Employers line up to back campaign
Many of the UK’s best-known retailers gave their support to the Freedom From Fear campaign last year and in particular to the Charter which called for minimum levels of respect and dignity for shopworkers.
In addition, a number of companies put up posters in their stores reminding customers that violence and abuse would not be tolerated. Some have indicated that they will do the same this year.
The Co-op Group, Sainsbury's, Morrisons/Safeway, Littlewoods, TJ Hughes, Tesco, United Co-op, Iceland, Kwik Save/Somerfield were just some of the retailers to support the campaign. Trade groups the British retail Consortium and the association of Convenience Stores also backed Usdaw.
Some employers also allowed Usdaw reps to set up stalls outside their stores on National Respect Day last year. This was an ideal way to publicise the campaign, collect signatures for the petition, and raise Usdaw's profile among workers and shoppers alike.
