Safety paramount at high risk site
Health and safety at the Leeds site is not seen as an inconvenient add on, it is at the heart of Lever Faberge’s corporate strategy.
With storage of liquid petroleum gas on site, there is no room for complacency and none taken. Even though the site's safety record is very good with all trends on a downward curve, staff and management are working together to prevent any accidents.
"We have at least 20 Usdaw safety reps on site," said site convenor Malcolm Colbeck. "There are an additional 40 safety 'champions' as well who act as volunteers on safety issues."
There is a co-ordinated and systematic approach to safety, with first aiders in all departments, and medical facilities close by.
"We believe in a proactive safety role, with everyone involved being responsible for their own and others' safety," said safety officer Sarah Jo Lister, one of the team of on site safety and medical staff.
Regular site fire-drills and safety inspections give the factory a secure feel, with safety notices prominent everywhere. It's an inclusive and thorough part of the business.
"We use risk assessments, offer advice and support, communicate regularly, and we're always looking for continuous improvement. Every eventuality is covered," added Sarah. "We have a hands on attitude to safety, we don't wait for accidents to happen. We aim to use a helpful preventative approach, not a disciplinary one."
