Women speak up at conference

Occupational health, pensions, and equal pay topped the agenda at the TUC women’s conference earlier this year with Usdaw members at the forefront of the debates

The union's research into women and back pain was the subject of a proposition which called on the Health and Safety Executive to do more to protect women's health. This was carried unanimously by the delegates.

"The conference agreed with us that many women work in a physically and mentally demanding environment," said Women and Equalities Officer Ruth Cross.

"Members of our delegation were very vocal during the pensions and equal pay debates. We were very keen to press for improvements in the basic state pension as the best way to tackle poverty in old age. It was a very successful event for Usdaw."
