Stand up and be counted on September 17 National Respect Day

The biggest day in Usdaw’s history is planned for Wednesday September 17 when the nation will be called on to show some respect for the UK’s shopworkers.

The union will hold its first National Respect Day for shopworkers as part of the Freedom From Fear campaign.

Deputy General Secretary John Hannett is determined to make it an occasion to remember. "This is the most important day for shopworkers in years," he said. "It's the next step in our campaign to deliver safety and respect for retail staff.

"The campaign is going from strength to strength. We have had massive support for the Charter - from the British Retail Consortium and a string of top retailers.

"On the day, we're aiming to make everyone aware of our message that shopworkers deserve to go to work free from the fear of attack and abuse.

"We are calling on employers, the Government, the police, and the local authorities to help us make the workplace safer for the 2.7 million people who work in retail and for the millions of consumers who make up the shopping public.

"We've had fantastic support from our members, customers and many of the big names on the high street. The press has also covered the campaign and we've raised awareness of this issue right across the UK.

"I want to see as many Usdaw members as possible banging the drum for our Freedom From Fear campaign on September 17. We're also hoping to get senior Government support on the day.

"We want to make sure everyone knows how important the UK's shopworkers are to the local community and the economy. Staff deserve respect and this day will help deliver it."

What you can do

Arrangements are already in place to hold publicity stalls in many of the big towns and cities in support of the campaign. Leaflets, posters, and a whole range of promotional material will be made available to branches prior to September 17.

A national launch will take place in London, and regional events are being put in place in the divisions. Some branches have already made plans for the day.

Usdaw wants as many members as possible to get involved in the day. If you want to take part, organise an event at your store or town centre, or show your support in whatever way you can, contact your local office.
