Downing Street date for petition

Four members with direct experience of retail violence, and Deputy General Secretary John Hannett, raised the profile of the Freedom From Fear campaign even higher when they delivered the national petition to 10 Downing Street.

The box of petition sheets, containing more than 100,000 signatures all calling for greater protection for shopworkers, was handed into the Prime Minister's home on July 9.

"This was a great boost for the campaign," said John Hannett. "We have made a huge impact in parliament, hundreds of MPs are supporting us, and we've had extensive coverage in the press. We will be pushing ahead with the campaign.

"I'd like to thank our four members, Colin, Mark, Sharon and Jacqui, who put in a lot of time and effort to come to Downing Street, without them the event would not have had the same impact. A big thank you also to all the people who signed the petition - your support is invaluable.

"There is no avenue we won't explore to further our Freedom From Fear campaign and give our members and the shopping public the protection they deserve."
