Campaigning at cultural festivals
Usdaw reps and officials have been out in force at a number of cultural events held in the UK this summer. Activists have been spreading the word on union membership, the Freedom From Fear campaign and Usdaw’s equal opportunities policies.
More than 700 signatures were collected for the Freedom From Fear campaign at one of the biggest Asian festivals in the UK, the Bradford Mela weekend, in June.
Members and officials from the North Eastern division set up a stall during the two day festival and attracted widespread support for the campaign. Recruitment and Development Officer Sharon Hargrave helped organise the publicity drive. "We had a fantastic response," she said. "The reps gave a lot of their time and effort during the weekend, and it paid off handsomely.
"Two local branches, United Yorkshire Co-op and Bradford Morrisons, sponsored the stall and our team of activists did the rest. Arif Alam, Monica Tharme, Susan Roper, Jayne Knight, Margaret Gibb, and Steve Pickup all deserve credit, and I'd like to thank them for all their hard work.
"The weekend is a massive event and attracts people from all over the UK. Hundreds, probably thousands, of people visited our stall, and it was a great opportunity to raise Usdaw's profile and sign up hundreds of names to the petition.
"Our merchandise went well with balloons, stickers and leaflets being taken by many visitors. Thankfully, the weather was perfect and everyone really enjoyed the experience. We're already planning next year's event!"
