Arena Magazine
Arena is the union's quarterly 24 page colour magazine sent out to members at their home address. It is packed full of stories on the full range of union services from Legal Plus and includes updates on all the union's current campaigns. Each issue of Arena is available to download from the web site in PDF format, visit the Resource Library for more information.

2008 Issue 1 Spring Arena
The first issue of arena 2008 is on its way to Usdaw's ever-expanding membership now at more than 360,000. It is full of real-life stories of how Usdaw is winning for its members and how its reps are making Usdaw one of the fastest growing unions in the UK. You can catch up with the campaign targets for this year; your rights at work, your health questions and there are chances to win cash and other prizes. 2007 Issue 4 Winter Arena
The winter issue of arena has just been printed and its packed with good news stories of how Usdaw has helped ordinary working people improve their lives. The magazine is packed with Legal Plus wins, a pension mis-selling case and personal testimonies from members of how the union has changed their lives. This festive issue also reflects on the massive headway the union has made in 2007 in terms of membership growth, campaign successes and other victories. With topical features on know your rights and Christmas drinking it's a must read publication for all union members.

2007 Issue 3 Autumn Arena
The autumn issue of arena is on its way to Usdaw's growing 353,000 plus members packed with all the latest campaign news, information and entertaining features you'd expect from this award-winning magazine. 2007 Issue 2 Summer Arena

2007 Issue 1 Spring Arena
The Spring issue of Arena 2007 should be landing on the doorsteps of every Usdaw member anytime now and it's packed full of how the union and its members are making a real difference in workplaces across the UK. You can read how individuals have used the union's campaigns and services to promote safety, encourage family friendly policies, win compensation with Legal Plus, and turned their lives around with lifelong learning. 2006 Issue 5 Winter Arena
A thoughtful-looking Santa Claus adorns the cover of the winter issue of Arena which is packed full of information and news to keep you entertained over the frantic festive season. Bank holiday working is tackled head on with members encouraged to check their contracts now to ensure they know what their entitlements are this year. With a special feature on the union's 20,000 drivers and the regular articles on hard-working reps, young activists and Legal Plus victories look out for Arena arriving on your doorstep soon.

2006 Issue 4 Autumn Arena
The autumn issue of the new look Arena has just landed on the doorsteps of the union's 340,000 members packed with campaign news, informative features, and personal profiles. The 24 page full colour magazine reflects the many aspects of Usdaw including its Legal Plus service, health advice and an essential - know your rights - spread. You can also win £500 as part of the recruit a friend feature which was won by a distribution worker from Northants after the summer issue. 2006 Issue 3 Summer Arena
The all new Arena is winging its way to every member of the union at their home address. In a major step forward for Usdaw this exciting new publication tells you everything you need to know about how the union is changing the lives of its members no matter where they work, no matter what they do and no matter where they live. Interviews with members – just like you – dominate the issue. 2006 Issue 2 March April
If you want evidence of how Usdaw's members are making a massive difference in workplaces across the UK then the March/April issue of Arena is just what you're looking for. From promoting better rights for parents and carers to saving our Sundays from longer trading hours, the union's campaigning activities are gaining a high profile at work, in the home and in parliament where hundreds of MPs are backing Usdaw. If you add lifelong learning opportunities and the Legal Plus service to the mix you'll see what a vibrant and energetic union like Usdaw is doing for you and its 336,000 members.

2006 Issue 1 January February
The first issue of Arena 2006 - crammed full of information, advice and features - should be landing in Usdaw workplaces across the UK now. As usual members feature prominently and there are countless stories on how Usdaw has changed their lives for the better - whether that's in compensation after an accident at work, lifelong learning opportunities or protecting staff at work. Age is no bar to involvement in Usdaw with young workers taking centre stage, and the front cover, providing more examples of how active reps are delivering an excellent service to their members. Usdaw is well-known for being the campaigning union and this is well in evidence with the latest initiative which will see Usdaw continue to protect Sunday from any extension in trading hours with examples of members already working hard to drum up support among their colleagues, the shopping public and MPs.

2005 Issue 6 November December
The final issue of Arena for 2005 is now available and is jam-packed with stories of how Usdaw is making a difference in workplaces the length and breadth of the UK. News items from Sunday trading to bank holiday working to retail violence and the latest company developments keep members right up-to-date with the ever-changing world of work. The issue also reflects on 20 years of the women's committees, the last 12 months of the Supporting Parents & Carers campaign and looks ahead to next year's Annual Delegate Meeting and the current round of presidential and executive council elections. Recruitment stories and young activists feature prominently as do lifelong learning developments and individual case studies prove once again the importance of the Legal Plus service. 2005 Issue 5
Usdaw is nothing if not a campaigning union and you can see just how effective these are in the latest issue (September/October) of Arena. The Supporting Parents and Carers and the Freedom From Fear campaigns have given Usdaw a national profile – making them the envy of other, often bigger, organisations. Behind these successes is the union's small army of activists who can be seen on the high streets and in the retail parks taking these campaigns to the shopping public. Elsewhere personal testimonies from members who have made the most of lifelong learning and the Legal Plus service will show you how their experiences are making such a massive impact on their lives. 2005 Issue 4
Summer is well and truly here and so is the July/August issue of Arena which tackles all of the important issues facing members in a lively and readable style. It's not everyday you see a General Secretary juggling outside the House of Commons but that's the front cover picture as John Hannett took the Supporting Parents and Carers campaign to the heart of government with specially commissioned juggling balls representing work, life and caring. Recruitment features strongly in this issue with pride of place going to the national recruitment prize draw which offers the chance to win a car, a luxury holiday and thousands of pounds of shopping vouchers to members who recruit at least five members. A special four-page pull-out gives a comprehensive explanation of what Usdaw has to offer. Young activists figure prominently with a close look at Argos reps, academy organisers and stand down reps also reflect the energy in evidence on the shopfloor across the UK. The annual black members weekend also reflects the diversity within Usdaw. 2005 Issue 3
If it's happening in Usdaw you can read about it in Arena with the May/June issue out now to keep you right up-to-date with all the latest union news. Members are really making a difference in their workplaces and communities on everything from lifelong learning, Freedom From Fear, Supporting Parents and Carers, and helping their colleagues get first class legal help through the union's Legal Plus service. Energetic young reps at Sainsbury's, a feature on the transport section and a report on this year's ADM complete a packed issue showing Usdaw at its confident, positive and campaigning best. All of these 'good news' stories coupled with our regular features, including special offers on holidays and mortgages, give this third issue of 2005 a really upbeat feel.

2005 Issue 2
The Supporting Parents & Carers campaign features strongly in the latest issue (March/April) of Arena with reports on how Labour MPs and parliamentary candidates have backed the first of the three 'Spotlight days' which will bring the parental and caring rights of our members to the fore. Last year was a record-breaking year for the Legal Plus service, which has recovered more than £19 million for members injured or treated unfairly at work, so it takes pride of place on the centre spread. In addition features on energetic young Morrisons reps, a close look at the food processing plant at Malton Bacon, Tesco shop steward elections, and our regular articles on recruitment, news, lifelong learning, and training opportunities, make sure you look out for your copy of Arena arriving at your workplace soon.

2005 Issue 1
2005 will be the year Usdaw's Supporting Parents and Carers campaign makes a real impact on the work/life balance of union members across the UK and to mark the event the first issue of Arena features the latest stage of this exciting new initiative. The campaign has already attracted widespread support and with three special 'spotlight' events planned it looks set to stay in the public eye during the coming months. The Jan/Feb issue also takes a close look at the perils of 'no win no fee' deals and contrasts those with the success of the Usdaw Legal Plus service which continues to go from strength to strength with personal testimonies from Usdaw members showing just how important this free service is. Other subjects covered include bank holiday working, lifelong learning, recruitment, young activists, and the Morrisons/Safeway merger and how reps are coming together. There are workplace features on Kellogg's Wrexham and IKEA Rotherham, and advanced notice of the forthcoming North West campaign in Marks and Spencer stores. More news and regular features complete the mix making Arena the essential read for all Usdaw members and potential members.

2004 Issue 6
If it's happening in Usdaw you'll read about it in the November/December issue of Arena – now available and packed full of festive stories and features. First up is the Christmas Day (Trading) Act which signals the end of Usdaw's successful campaign to ban large stores from opening on December 25. And while one crusade closes the union gets ready to launch its new Supporting Parents & Carers campaign which aims to redress the work/life balance. Check out the early coverage of this exciting new initiative. Important advice on underage sales is also offered and the unseen costs of alcohol abuse comes under scrutiny. The activities of the union's young and women members is also featured. The 2005 Academy is flagged up as part of the regular recruitment feature. 2004 Issue 5
Evidence of Usdaw's influence on the shopfloor, the political arena, and the essential legal help it provides are on full display in the September/October issue of Arena. All the latest news, a special investigation into pregnancy at work, and information on what's going on in Usdaw and the world of work is packed into the 32 page colour magazine mailed out to members at their workplaces. Useful advice on Tax Credit overpayments, Lifelong Learning, and how the union's activists are making a difference in shops, factories and offices across the UK reflect the many opportunities and services available to Usdaw's ever expanding membership - now running in excess of 338,000 and rising. Features on healthy eating, home shopping, recruitment and the usual regular articles complete the picture and provide essential reading for Usdaw members wherever they work and whatever they do.

2004 Issue 4
The fourth and latest issue of Arena (July/August 2004) is now available and crammed full of issues important to Usdaw members across the UK. The first National Respect Week for Shopworkers features heavily with up-to-date pictures of events up and down the country from Cardiff to Cumnock and Wakefield to Westminster as the latest stage in the award winning Freedom From Fear campaign continues to dominate the headlines. The annual black members' weekend also gives the reader an insight into the union's equality work and throughout the magazine you'll find fascinating portraits of active reps. With regular features on the Legal Plus service, recruitment, lifelong learning and the letters pages, Arena reflects a confident upbeat union filled with talented and dedicated members.

2004 Issue 3
The May/June Arena is now available with a rich mixture of news, features and information on the work of Usdaw, its reps and members across the UK. The first National Respect for Shopworkers Week on July 5-11 is eagerly anticipated as the union gears up for this special groundbreaking event. Home Secretary David Blunkett's visit to the Annual Delegate Meeting also features with coverage of the main debates at the union's own parliament. New General Secretary John Hannett is introduced to readers as he begins his tenure as leader of Usdaw after seven years as Deputy General Secretary. Ongoing recruitment success is celebrated as is the Legal plus service and with features on a Tesco store in Greater Manchester and a health feature on skin cancer, plus much more, the May/June issue provides an entertaining read for the union's 333,000 members.

2004 Issue 2
Everything you need to know about the work of Usdaw and the opportunities available to its members fills the pages of the second issue of Arena 2004. The magazine highlights the personal achievements and benefits to members who have made the most of their membership. Whether that's the Free Legal Plus Service, lifelong learning, or recruitment, Arena shows what Usdaw is all about – its members. The latest news and company developments, and the next stage in the Freedom From Fear campaign all feature strongly. Arena also takes a look at the manufacturing side of the union with the United Biscuits site in Harlesden and the United Glass site in Alloa proving Usdaw is more than just the shopworkers' union. With articles on smoking, the Annual Delegate Meeting, Sir Bill Connor's retirement, pensions, equal opportunities and its regular features, the March/April issue has something for everyone.

2004 Issue 1
The Protect Christmas Day campaign, rights at work, how to cope with debt, recruitment, and lifelong learning provide just some of the features in the first issue of Arena for 2004. With an in depth look at the futuristic Lever Faberge site in Leeds, a special focus on the national youth weekend, and combined with its other regular features, the Jan/Feb edition adds up to a revealing and informative look at the topics important to Usdaw members.

2003 Issue 6
The last issue of Arena 2003 (November/December) signs off with a close look at the people who are making Usdaw the most vibrant and fastest growing union in the UK, its members. Features on the individuals who are union reps, lifelong learning success stories, top recruiters, and women activists give the Nov/Dec issue a particular grassroots feel. The latest campaign news is highlighted and Usdaw's high profile at the Labour Party conference coupled with the regular features adds to the mix. The Freedom From Fear campaign and the National Respect Day is also pictured heavily and with the chance to buy the highly-acclaimed Respect CD providing the perfect Christmas present for all Usdaw members, it's an issue you can't afford to miss!

2003 Issue 5
Members in action on National Respect Day dominate the September/October issue of Arena with pictures from Downing Street to across the nation's high streets. The hugely successful day marked the biggest event in the union's history for many years with more than 100 stalls organised in the UK's towns and cities by active reps and members. Young members also feature prominently in this issue as do the union's army of recruitment specialists. Lifelong learning at Boots and Tesco, divisional round-ups, and the latest news on the Safeway/Morrisons takeover coupled with the regular features complete the 32 page colour magazine.

2003 Issue 4
The July/August Arena features Usdaw members handing in the national petition at Downing Street, and campaigning in the shops and supermarkets, in support of the Freedom from Fear campaign. Campaigners are pictured from across the UK spreading the union's message against violence and abuse. A list of promotional venues for National Respect Day on September 17 is also included. The issue also focuses on members; at the black and Asian weekend, in distribution, who are top recruiters, pushing ahead with lifelong learning, at cultural events, and at the union's new academy. Topical news items are also covered.

2003 Issue 3
The May/June Arena includes the Freedom From Fear Respect magazine which was launched at ADM. This special 16 page section gives a comprehensive round up of the campaign and looks ahead to the union's exciting plans for the National Respect Day (September 17) and the Charter already signed by a string of top retailers. The Arena section includes the annual review of the Legal Plus service which recovered more than £16 million for members in 2002. A round up of the main events at this year's Annual Delegate Meeting also features along with regulars from Ann Coffey MP, your letters to the editior, and the competition page.

2003 Issue 2
The March/April Arena is packed full of stories on Lifelong Learning, our Freedom From Fear campaign, and recruitment success stories. Two members tell how the union won their racial and disability discrimination cases while workplace visits focus on working members at Sunlight Services and Tibbett and Britten. Updates on Christmas Day trading and the forthcoming Annual Delegate Meeting are also included as well as the work of the black members section. Legal Plus cases plus regulars Ann Coffey MP, your letters and the divisional round-up conclude the issue.

2003 Issue 1
The first issue of a new look Arena 2003 is now available and packed full of stories on union members making a difference in the workplace.
