Manual handling is the most
common cause of accidents and ill-health in the workplace.
According to Government figures, 1.2 million people suffer from
some form of work-related musculo-skeletal disorder (back pain,
RSI, etc). Just over half of these injuries are caused by manual
handling.
Manual handling risks are
even more important for Usdaw members. In sectors such as retail
and distribution, manual handling accounts for an even higher
proportion of injuries because of the lifting and carrying
involved.
