Mental health problems are very common. One in four people will
experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives and
one in six workers experiences stress, anxiety or depression. This
means that Usdaw Reps are likely to come across members with mental
health problems at some point during their working lives. Usdaw
wants to do all it can to help Reps better support members with
mental health problems.
The Union has produced a briefing and
a poster to encourage Reps to start
talking about mental health in the workplace.
Talking about mental health helps to tackle some of the stigma
and prejudice that surrounds the issue and gives members the
confidence to approach their Rep if their mental health is causing
problems for them at work.
This guidance has been produced by the Union at the request of
Reps and outlines general ‘dos and ‘don’ts’ when discussing mental
health with members. Remember these are guidelines only and what
works for one person might not work for another.
