Save Union Learning

The Government has announced that it will be withdrawing all funding from the Union Learning Fund (ULF) from March 2021. This decision only affects the ULF in England.

We think that the Government is making a massive mistake. The Union Learning Fund gives people a second chance to get back into learning - often people who haven’t done any learning since they left school.

In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the devolved governments have responsibility for the Union Learning Fund and that funding continues.

What learning does the Fund provide?

Government funding is vital in supporting the union’s Lifelong Learning initiatives, such as Lifelong Learning Centres, Mobile Union Learning Reps and promotional activity such as the ‘Check-Out Learning’ campaign.

Here at Usdaw, the fund allowed us to support 17,500 members in some form of learning in the last year. Many of those members have improved their basic skills in English, Maths and IT – this can be literally life changing.

Over the last three years, we’ve also developed our Online Learning Gateway, offering over 1,000 online courses, from informal learning to degree level qualifications.

We have learning agreements with over 20 major employers and, through the ULF, we’ve opened more than 60 workplace learning centres.
