About Supporting Parents & Carers

Spotlight Day - Difficult Balancing Act?

Each year we hold a campaign day called Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day. Hundreds of reps and activists get involved by running campaigns at their workplaces.

Spotlight Day aims to reach out to members who are balancing work with looking after someone whether it is children, grandchildren, older family members or a disabled person.

'Difficult Balancing Act?' was the theme for last years campaign. We wanted to reach out to grandparents as well as to parents and carers, and are campaigning for better support for grandparents to make it easier for them to balance paid work with caring for grandchildren.

'A Better Deal for Dads?' is this year's theme and will focus on statutory paternity leave, which is currently too short (only two weeks), poorly paid and inflexible.

How this helps you

We want to let members know that:

  • The Union understands that changes to contracts and demands for ever greater flexibility are making it harder for members who are parents and carers.
  • We can help with problems like hours of work or needing time off to care.
  • We can signpost members to appropriate support organisations where difficulties balancing work with care commitments are causing problems outside of work.
  • And to raise awareness of rights at work.

The right to request flexible working

All members who have at least 26 weeks service can ask their employer for a change in their working hours.
