About Supporting Parents & Carers

Spotlight Day - A Better Deal for Dads

Each year Usdaw holds a campaign day called Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day. Hundreds of reps and activists get involved by running campaigns in their workplaces.

This years spotlight day, themed 'A Better Deal for Dads', highlighted the poor state of rights to time off work for fathers and partners of new mothers. We are campaigning for increased paternity leave entitlements, enhanced paternity pay and paid time off to attend ante-natal appointments.

Research shows that allowing fathers time off to look after their newly born children is beneficial for everybody.

How this helps you

We want to let members know that:

  • The Union understands that changes to contracts and demands for ever greater flexibility are making it harder for members who are parents and carers.
  • We can help with problems like hours of work or needing time off to care.
  • We can signpost members to appropriate support organisations where difficulties balancing work with care commitments are causing problems outside of work.
