Usdaw has joined the BRC in urging mayors, along with police and crime commissioners (PCCs) across the UK to improve retail workers’ protection measures. Workers are at the core of Labour’s election offer – Usdaw welcomes progress at the NPF 24 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw has highlighted some key gains for their members and other working people from Labour’s National Policy Forum (NPF), which met at the weekend in Nottingham. The House of Lords today backed down after their latest bid to secure changes to this controversial measure had been rejected by Conservative MPs three times. Worrying 24% increase in shoplifting across England and Wales – Usdaw calls for retail crime to be taken seriously 20 July 2023 Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw is deeply concerned by today’s police recorded crime statistics for England and Wales showing that in the 12 months to March there was a 24% increase in shoplifting. This continues the trend of persistent quarterly increases after a dramatic decrease during the pandemic. Double-digit inflation continues to devalue wages – Usdaw calls for a new deal for workers to tackle the cost of living crisis 19 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw is calling for the Government to address the cost of living crisis, after today’s statistics show that wages continue to be devalued by double-digit inflation. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) rate dipped to 10.7% and has now been in double-digits for well over a year, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) also fell to 7.9%. Protect the right to strike! Usdaw urges the Government to drop their anti-union Bill as Peers’ continue to insist on more scrutiny 17 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw is calling on the Government to drop their Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Bill to break the deadlock on this controversial legislation. Today (17 July) the House of Commons will consider the Bill for a third time after Peers again insisted on more consultation and scrutiny. National Retail Workers’ Day 2023: Usdaw launches a national appreciation day for retail key workers who should be valued and respected 15 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw has today (15 July) launched the first annual National Retail Workers’ Day, which engages with the public to highlight the value of retail workers in our shops and communities. Retail directly employs nearly 3 million, with around a further 1.5 million jobs reliant on the success of the industry. It is the biggest private sector employer in the country. High Court declares the Government’s ‘strike-breaking’ agency worker regulations unlawful – Usdaw welcomes the verdict 13 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw is one of eleven unions to have launched a judicial review of new Government regulations that would allow employers to engage agency workers to fill in for striking workers. The High Court has today ruled in favour of the unions and against the Government. Low Pay Commission to hear Usdaw’s evidence for a minimum wage of at least £12 and an end to rip-off youth rates 12 July 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw is to give oral evidence to the Low Pay Commission (LPC) on Thursday 13 July about minimum wage rates. The LPC is continuing their annual consultation process ahead of making recommendations to the Government this autumn about the new minimum wage rates, which are expected to come into force on 1 April 2024.
