Shopworkers’ trade union leader Paddy Lillis has called for Government action in light of the Office for National Statistics today reporting a further increase in police recorded incidents of shoplifting in England and Wales in the year to June 2018, continuing the trend of a 32% increase over the last decade.

Paddy Lillis has welcomed today’s opposition day debate in the House of Commons and renewed Usdaw’s call on the Government to immediately halt the roll-out of Universal Credit. That would enable a fundamental rethink and a complete overhaul of a system that is broken and will not work.

Offensive Weapons Bill lets off those illegally trying to buy knives and acid, but can criminalise retail staff says Usdaw

The Offensive Weapons Bill sets out criminal penalties for shopworkers and delivery drivers who complete sales of corrosive substances and knives to under-18s. However there is no penalty for the person attempting to illegally buy these age-restricted products, even if they abuse or threaten the retail worker.
