‘Keep your cool’ and respect shopworkers on Black Friday says Usdaw

Date: 22 November 2023 Retail trade union Usdaw has called for bargain hunters to ‘keep their cool’ on Black Friday (24 November 2023) as millions of shoppers are set to take advantage of what is now described as the biggest discounting day of the retail year.
Paddy Lillis – Usdaw General Secretary says: “When stores are busy, customers can get frustrated with queues and stock quickly disappearing off the shelves; too often that that can turn into anger towards shopworkers. Incidents of violence, threats and abuse against retail staff are already worryingly high.

“Interim figures from this year’s Usdaw survey reveal that two-thirds of our members working in retail suffered abuse from customers, with far too many experiencing threats and violence. Six in ten of these incidents were triggered by theft from shops, which is clearly the result of a 25% increase in police recorded shoplifting.

“Theft from shops is not a victimless crime and has long been a major flashpoint for violence and abuse against retail staff. Having to deal with repeated and persistent shoplifters can cause issues beyond the theft itself like anxiety, fear and in some cases physical harm to retail workers. Worryingly, shoplifters thrive in busy stores, so this Friday could see a spike in incidents.

“My Black Friday message to shoppers is clear. Enjoy your bargain hunting, keep your cool and respect shopworkers.”
